Last month ’ s release of the federal budget 2022-23 has seen mixed reaction within the community .
Here is what ’ s been said by our current sitting Member for Macquarie , Susan Templeman ( ALP ), and Liberal candidate for the seat of Macquarie , Hawkesbury councillor Sarah Richards .
Macquarie overlooked : Templeman
The federal budget has confirmed that local roads devastated by flood and storms will not see one cent of a fund that is currently earning the Morrison Government hundreds of millions of dollars in interest .
“$ 300 million of the $ 4 billion Emergency Response Fund will be spent between now and June 2023 for disaster resilience in NSW and Queensland , but the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains misses out ,” MP Susan Templeman said .
“ The money earmarked to be spent is obviously welcome news for those severely hit communities … but why isn ’ t any funding going towards repairing the devasted roads and riverbanks in the Hawkesbury , or to make Blue Mountains infrastructure more resilient to fires and storms ?
“ I went to Upper Colo Road earlier this month … sections of the road have disappeared ... the bridge that washed away in March 2021 hasn ’ t yet been replaced .
“ A huge section of Cornwallis simply doesn ’ t exist anymore ... there ’ s a 100m-wide chasm . The potholes on Pitt Town ’ s evacuation route are bonecrunching … areas like Berambing and townships up and down the Great Western Highway , drivers were popping tyres because of the state of the roads .
“ This Budget could have delivered real improvements for our region . Allocating money for local infrastructure from this fund could have made a tangible difference to so many lives particularly during natural disasters .
“ There ’ s a cash splash before the election and at least $ 3 billion in secret cuts after , buried in the Budget papers .
“ Josh Frydenburg and Scott Morrison are asking Australians for another three years , but they haven ’ t made any meaningful steps to addressing the aged care crisis and they haven ’ t funded a National Anti-Corruption Commission .
“ The Budget shows inflation rising and real wages are going backwards , leaving
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg with Sarah Richards .
Macquarie MP Susan Templeman shows Shadow Minister for Local Government Jason Clare the devastation at Cornwallis following this year ’ s floods .
average workers more than $ 1300 worse off .
“ An Albanese Labor Government has real policies to ease the costs of living , strengthen Medicare , deliver cleaner and cheaper energy , a better NBN , cheaper access to childcare , fee-free TAFE to tackle the skills crisis , and a Future Made in Australia .”
More support for Macquarie : Richards
The 2022 Budget will offset cost of living challenges , while providing tax incentives for small businesses and the stimulus to create jobs and grow the local economy , said Federal Liberal candidate for Macquarie Sarah Richards .
“ This is a budget that will put more money in your pocket immediately ,” Richards said .
“ And the record investment in essential services will keep us safe .”
Richards said that with global events pushing up the cost of living , the immediate fuel tax excise cut , in place for 6 months , would relieve financial pressure on motorists .
“ A 22c per litre saving at the bowser means a $ 700 saving for a two-car family over a 6-month period .”
More than 61,000 taxpayers in Macquarie will benefit from tax relief of up to $ 1500 this year . The money made up of the $ 1080 low-and middle-income tax offset and a $ 420 cost of living tax offset .
The Government ’ s Tax Plan has already benefited 67,500 people in Macquarie , in addition to the one-off cost of living tax offset the Government is also providing a one-off cost of living payment of $ 250 for Australians most in need .
In Macquarie , these payments will be delivered to 15,509 pensioners , 3954 disability support recipients , 1268 carers , 6497 jobseekers , 10,737 eligible selffunded retirees .
Together , with the recent pension increases , this will see the 15,509 pensioners receive more than $ 500 in additional support over the next 6 months .
“ There ’ s unprecedented investment in aged care and with more than 24,000 senior Australians living in Macquarie there will be more home care places , more funding for aged care homes and more money to ensure nurses and carers can spend more time with residents .”
Richards said the budget plan to continue to support job seekers and young people would lead to even more opportunities for trade apprenticeships . Australia currently has a record high of 220,000 workers in trade apprenticeships .
