This month we celebrate International Women ’ s Day which commemorates women ’ s achievements and highlights gender equality .
# BreakTheBias is the theme of this year ’ s international day of celebration , reminding us all to strive to live free of bias , stereotypes and discrimination .
We should all strive for a world that is diverse , equitable , and inclusive , where difference is valued and celebrated .
We can all make an effort to break the bias in our workplaces , schools and greater community .
Your gender should not dictate the opportunities you are afforded , nor should it exclude you from being valued or living your best life possible .
The Independent was very sad to hear of the passing of well-known community identity and business man Dick Petrikas . Like many in the district we have known
HDI the Petrikas family for many years and send our deepest condolences to his loved ones .
Our journalist Greg Martin presents a story about Dick on P5 . He recounts some of this devoted family man ’ s life since his arrival in Tennyson in 1950 as a migrant , his many community honours and outstanding recognition of volunteer rural bush fire service . Dick passed away last month , aged 83 . John Levy , another of our town ’ s well-known identities , and who is better known as Mr Movies , has retired after 33 years of managing and owning the historic Richmond Regent Twin Cinemas .
You can read about the 84-year-old ’ s love for film , the Silver Screen and the Hawkesbury on P6-7 .
We hope you enjoy this month ’ s edition packed again with inspirational people and community news .
