Ninety years in this place and still as fit as a Mallee bull !
Ron and the “ love of my life ”, his wife of 67 years and best mate , Val , celebrated the occasion with a low-key lunch with their children and their partners , Kerry and Peter Gostelow , Philip and Susan Males and Peter and Kathleen Males .
“ Peter and Kathleen hosted the lovely , catered lunch at their Windsor home ,” Ron said .
“ Because of the COVID restrictions it had to be a low-key affair but we are planning a much bigger gathering early next year to belatedly celebrate my 90th birthday with the extended family and friends .”
No doubt Kerry , Peter , Philip , Susan , Peter and Kathleen will be backing up along with their nine children and Ron and Val ’ s 11 great grandchildren .

Scarecrow trail competition by Maryann Jenkins

Strange , sassy and silly straw figures have been popping up in gardens , paddocks and hanging in hedges all over town , amusing locals as part of the Kurrajong Scarecrow Trail competition .
With interactive tour map guides and judging taking place as we go to press , this inaugural event is the brainchild of East Kurrajong ’ s Rachael Vaughan and has kicked off in grand style – take a look at these pictures from Scarecrow Trail entrants in Kurrajong , East Kurrajong , Bowen Mountain and Bilpin .
With the popular Kurrajong Scarecrow Festival being in hiatus for nine years , Rachael said our towns and families needed an event to celebrate .
“ We ’ ve been through fires , floods , cut off from services and in a pandemic , we need something fun involving children , parents , our community coming together like we always do ,” said an excited Rachael , who pulled competition together in just three weeks .
“ This is the first year so we ’ re just showing people what we can do . Children growing up as part of a community need neighbourhood things to do together .”
The enthusiastic organising committee comprises Rachael , Diane Lowe , Tanya Ridgewell and Karen Roberts ( Pansy Junction shops ). Main sponsor is the Peer Me Up program , with support from Ray White Kurrajong , Cathy Walton Real Estate , the Village Kitchen and Schembraes , who ’ ve donated prizes for all the winners across multiple categories .
Judges include ‘ Jimbo ’ from the Hawkesbury Antique Machinery Club and residents of the Kingsford Smith retirement village .
The scarecrows are still on display , so get your map from the Kurrajong Scarecrow Trail Facebook page or kurrajongscarecrow . info and visit your neighbours , local shops and enjoy spotting these straw beauties in our towns .
