Summer is coming . Learn to save a life .
We often hear about heart attacks , but not so much about cardiac arrest . Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating . It is a medical emergency that can lead to death . With the summer season fast approaching , this article aims to raise awareness about cardiac arrest , the prevalence in our community and what we can all do as individuals to help save lives .
Cardiac arrest survivors consider themselves lucky to be alive , often thanks to the quick actions of someone who performed CPR or used a defibrillator . Every year , about 20,000 cases of cardiac arrests are reported that occur outside the hospital and in the community , across Australia .
If CPR is performed in the event of these arrests , the person can be kept alive until emergency help arrives , and this can more than double their chance of survival .
Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre has signed up with the Westmead Applied Research Centre ( WARC ), at The University of Sydney to be part of an education campaign and research program called FirstCPR .
FirstCPR aims to increase or refresh knowledge , awareness , training , confidence and willingness in responding to a cardiac arrest emergency in the community .
People that are trained in CPR ( cardiopulmonary resuscitation ) are more likely to be confident to act promptly in the event of a cardiac arrest emergency and can potentially save the life of a family member , friend or neighbour .
Refreshing CPR skills regularly makes people more likely to retain these skills . FirstCPR can be useful to you even if you may have done training some time ago .
FirstCPR participants will get access to specially designed training in the form of short videos and factsheets on responding to a cardiac arrest emergency delivered via email or text message . They will also have the opportunity to attend a face-to-face information session with demonstration on how to do CPR and how to use an AED ( Automated External Defibrillator ).
Our collaboration is offering free training for an accredited CPR training course that involves hands-on training on a mannikin and is carried out by FirstCPR partner organisation-Surf Life Saving NSW .
