Color 2: one 1½″ x 16″
Color 3: one 2 7/8 ″x 11½″ strip AND one 1½″ x 18″ strip AND one
1½″ x 16″ strip AND 1 one 2½″ x 12½″ strip
Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block
1. First, speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides
together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark
the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half
squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim
these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed
2. Next sew a Color 2 and Color 3 1-1/2" x 16" strip together along one long
edge using a scant 1/4" seam. Press to darker side and cut into four 2-1/2"
wide units and four 1-1/2" wide units...
3. Cut the Color 3 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares. Sew each one of these
to one of the 2-1/2" wide units we just made, as shown at left. The extra Color 3 21/2" square will be for the block's center...
4. Now sew together a Color 1 and Color 3 1-1/2" x 18" strip along one long
edge. Press to dark side and cut into twelve 1-1/2" wide units...
5. Sew four of the four patch units shown at top left, and four of
the four patch units shown at bottom left...
6. Sew two four patch units and two half squares together to make each of
the four corner units...
7. Now it's time to piece the block. Lay out the units as shown at left. Sew three
horizontal rows, pressing the top and bottom rows to the center and the middle
row to the outside. Join the three rows to complete the block!
Hello friends
I write this email to invite you to attend the opening reception of the Mended World
exhibition at the Art Gallery of Sudbury, January 18, 2014 at 2 pm.
This exhibition will highlight the amazing four year long Manitoulin Circle Project. Every Thursday between October 2009 and August 2013, regular and drop-in stitchers met in the United Church hall in Little Current, Manitoulin Island and worked together all day at hand stitching. In total, 144 participants. Four large meditation panels are the result and these will be installed in the art gallery's main exhibition space on the main floor. The eventual location of these panels will be in the sanctuary of the
Little Current United Church. I designed the panels, taught the techniques to the participants and enjoyed working
with them to create these pieces. Two of the panels are completely stitched together by hand. The main fabric was
donated recycled linen damask table cloths. There will be a walk-through of the exhibition during the reception on
Saturday Jan 18. Please consider attending, I would appreciate seeing you there.
The exhibition will remain on view until March 2, 2014. Judy Martin
