Colon & Rectum Cancer in Hawai ‘ i

• Cancers of the colon & rectum are the 3rd most frequently diagnosed cancer in Hawai ‘ i with an average of 710 new cases ( 385 males , 325 females ) diagnosed each year .
• With an average of 216 deaths ( 118 males , 98 females ) from colon & rectum cancer in Hawai ‘ i each year , it is the 3rd leading cause of cancer death in men and 4th among women .
• Eighty-three percent of colon & rectum cancers are diagnosed at age 55 years and older .
• Colon & rectum cancer incidence and mortality have steadily declined in males and females statewide over the past 35 years . Over the past decade , the rate of new cancers declined an average of 2.3 % per year in males and 1.5 per year in females ; mortality rates fell 2.6 % per year in males and 1.7 % per year in females .
• In 2014-2018 , colon & rectum cancer incidence was higher in Hawai ‘ i males ( 46.0 per 100,000 ) compared to 43.5 per 100,000 in the U . S . overall . Mortality was lower in Hawai ‘ i ( males 13.9 and females 9.5 per 100,000 ) compared to the U . S . overall ( males 16.3 and females 11.5 per 100,000 ).
• In 2014-2018 , 38 % of colon & rectum cancers were diagnosed at early stages and 55 % at advanced stages . Stage distribu�on was similar across race / ethnic groups .
