Orchard
The ’urban orchard’ is a term we use to describe the existing fruit trees
in the community. Identifying and mapping the urban orchard adds value
to a community’s sustainable resources by
v v increasing potential for redistributing excess fruit to people
experiencing food insecurity
v v protecting fruit trees for future generations
v v developing the sustainability of fruit-tree health and preservation
v v recognising heritage and significant varieties
v v connecting elders in the community and sharing their gardening
traditions
v v generating community action
v v improving quality of and engagement with the local environment
v v promoting environmental awareness and education
v v creating conditions that can directly improve health and wellbeing.
