HARVESTING THE URBAN ORCHARD DIVRS Wendell Berry, poet The Urban Orchard The ’urban orchard’ is a term we use to describe the existing fruit trees in the community. Identifying and mapping the urban orchard adds value to a community’s sustainable resources by v v increasing potential for redistributing excess fruit to people experiencing food insecurity v v protecting fruit trees for future generations v v developing the sustainability of fruit-tree health and preservation v v recognising heritage and significant varieties v v connecting elders in the community and sharing their gardening traditions v v generating community action v v improving quality of and engagement with the local environment v v promoting environmental awareness and education v v creating conditions that can directly improve health and wellbeing. 10 11 People need to feed themselves, next they need to feed their own communities.
