If you have been paying even a modicum of attention lately , you cannot have failed to notice that spiralizers are taking over the world – or at least our kitchens . This jaunty tool , originally invented in Japan , has rapidly become The Must-Have Gadget . So , what is so special about a spiralizer and why won ’ t it simply be consigned to the back of the cupboard in time ? Let ’ s start with what it does : simply , it cuts hard vegetables and fruit into ribbons and slices . It may not seem like a lot , but it saves getting sharp mandolins , graters and cutters out as it can all be done very quickly in one compact unit . And that ’ s the key – we want speed and efficiency , not to spend hours fiddling with attachments and instructions .
How do spiralizers work ? Imagine a giant pencil sharpener and you have the general idea – just push the fruit / veg onto the spiked holder and turn a handle which in turn pushes it through a blade . Even a raw whole potato can be turned into spirals of fine spaghetti in seconds .
Why would I need a spiralizer ? Investing in one gives you the prime excuse to make a conscious lifestyle change , to not only cut back on carbs , but to eat healthier . You can replace pasta and rice with a vegetable option , and for those with food allergies , it is the ideal way to substitute forbidden foods with a veggie version . There are several spiralizers on the market , from small handheld units that slot in a drawer , to those that sucker to your worktop and house a variety of different blades , but they all pretty much do the same . Price-wise , spiralizers vary from around £ 10 for the handheld up to around £ 90 and make inexpensive and useful gifts .
