HARBOR NEWS 805 Rowing Club Comes to Channel Islands Harbor
unshine , water , fun , fitness , teamwork all equals rowing ? Yep , rowing , competitive team rowing . The harbor community is pleased to welcome the 805 Rowing Club to its array of amenities offered to the residents of Ventura County .
Harrison Zilli became passionate about competitive team rowing while attending Oaks Christian High School in Westlake where he is currently a Senior , but the commute to Marina del Rey to row was too demanding , leading him to establish his own rowing club for high school boys and girls in Ventura County , and the 805 Rowing Club was born .
According to Harrison , “ The Channel Islands Harbor has ideal rowing conditions for our club . We are excited to be based there and welcome any high school boy or girl who are interested in learning how to row ”.
The club , based in Channel Islands Harbor , is the proud owner of an eight-man boat as well as a 4 man and 2 man boat . The club is coached by Nick Kenworthy-Browne , who formerly coached the men ’ s light-weight crew team at Oxnard University in England as well as the men ’ s crew teams at Boston University and USC , and is assisted by Jake Coert who rowed at Cal and was on the US Men ’ s Junior Olympic rowing team .
Aside from all the health benefits -- all-body fitness , strength , endurance , both physical and mental – rowing also provides scholastic opportunities for high school students to go on to higher education institutions . According to Coach Kenworthy-Browne , 40 % of all college scholarships offered to girls are in rowing . Furthermore , 17 % of all college rowers benefit from some type of athletic scholarship , as opposed to only 1 % of participants in the “ major ” sports such as football , baseball or basketball . Rowing provides not only a fun and different type of exercise for healthy living but also a different avenue for our young people to compete in a team sport that is a pathway to an affordable college education at prestigious colleges .
