FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS: THE
PLIGHT OF ENDANGERED FISH SPECIES
Monday, March 5, 2018 | 5:00pm | ZEB HOGAN EC OLOGIST,
EN V IRONMENTAL IST, N AT IONAL GEOGR A PHIC FELLOW
Dr. Zeb Hogan has spent the past
20 years studying the world’s
freshwater ecosystems, working
to merge conservation science
with conservation education and
action. His passion for freshwater
comes partially from his love,
fascination and curiosity about
aquatic habitats, and partially
from a recognition that freshwater fish are one of nature’s true
underdogs: misunderstood, understudied and severely threatened
by human activity. He gets inspiration from the hope that we can
find balance between our needs as humans and the need to preserve
increasingly fragile freshwater ecosystems. Zeb is an assistant
professor at the University of Nevada-Reno, a National Geographic
Society Fellow, and a United Nations Convention on Migratory
Species Scientific Councilor for Fish. He also hosts the National
Geographic television series, Monster Fish. His research includes
contributions to understanding the migratory patterns and
population status of vulnerable fish species.
HISTORY'S GREATEST
VOYAGES OF EXPLORATION
Thursdays, November 2, 16, & 30; December 7 & 14
Special Interest Room | No Charge | Pre-registration required
FACIL ITATOR
KAREN ZARSE
Throughout history, one of the deepest human impulses has been
the drive to explore, encounter and reveal the unknown. In this
five-week study group, you will learn about the difficulties of cross-
cultural exploration by the Jesuits and challenges of the Japanese
mission of 1871 to study the Western civilization. Two remarkable
women will also be studied, Ida Pfeiffer and Mary Kingsley. We will
follow the evolution of a new kind of exploration, not for wealth or
conquest but on behalf of science. Captain James Cook, Alexander
von Humboldt, and Lewis and Clark chart the outlines of a natural
world through discovery. In the harshest environments, the Arctic
and Antarctic, reaching the limit becomes its own reward. Explorers
have bound together the world we know today. Each session will
incorporate video content from The Great Courses with Professor
Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, Ph.D., University of Tennessee, and include
discussion led by the course facilitator.
There is no charge to attend but you must pre-register. A maximum
of 15 participants will be accepted.
