CONSCIOUS CINEMA

caveats on their core principles or by wittingly or unwittingly incorporating contradictions into their narratives . Those are problems for “ Inception ” ( 2010 ), an imaginative and award-winning exploration of the dream state whose story line is undermined by a plethora of restrictions , and “ About Time ” ( 2013 ), a frothy comedy-drama about time travel and multiple probabilities that has more than its share of inconsistencies . Such plot devices are usually incorporated to make their narratives work , and the filmmakers probably hope that viewers won ’ t notice these innate shortcomings . But , since conscious cinema fans are among some of the most astute moviegoers out there , it ’ s hard to slip things like this past them . And , unfortunately , these elements tend to be the downfall of these pictures .
As I noted above , most of the films featured herein aren ’ t intrinsically awful – just disappointing . But , with that said , I must confess that there are others out there that are truly dreadful . Two that readily come to mind are the laughably deplorable disaster epic “ 2012 ” ( 2009 ), a film that ’ s a disaster for reasons other than what happens on the screen ( and that incorporates little more than passing lip service to the spiritually oriented nature of that enigmatic time window ), and “ Split ” ( 2017 ), an alleged psychological examination of our multidimensional selves that ’ s ultimately little more than a cheesy teen exploitation movie ( and an offering far below the filmmaking capabilities of director M . Night Shyamalan ). Watch these at your peril .
As conscious creators well know , we often fail to get things right the first time . But , thanks to the opportunities this philosophy makes possible , we can always try again , tweaking our beliefs to get the right mix in the finished product . We can thus redeem ourselves for our “ errors .” And , fortunately , filmmakers can do the same – and it ’ s always great to see it when that happens .
