Handmade Seller Magazine Issue 9 | June 2016 | Page 50

I sell on Etsy, Amazon, and a few other platforms, but I would describe my business as an “accidental e-commerce business” because it began as a hobby business. If had to do it all over again, I would first build a website as a foundation and use those marketplaces as sales channels instead. This is because I have no control over those marketplaces, and sales can be there one day and gone the next through increased competition and changes to the algorithms.

Fast forward to today and I’m taking one step backward to take two steps forward. I’m building a website via Shopify and formed a mastermind group to help other Etsy sellers do the same.

So if you’re like me, and you started on a marketplace, but now wonder if a website makes sense for you, how do you know if you’re ready to make the leap?
