THE HOLY month of Ramadan is almost here !

Aside from keeping yourself busy with plans for iftar gatherings and maybe Eid preparations have you bought yourself new two-piece prayer wear , or best known in Malaysia as telekung ?
While Muslim women don ’ t need to have designated prayer outfits , it has become a custom for those in Southeast Asia , mainly Malaysia and Indonesia , to wear two-piece prayer garments . It is important to note that Muslim women can wear anything covering their aurah to perform prayers .
Still , most women in this region opt for telekung as it is a no brainer — loose and cover their aurah effortlessly . These telekungs usually come in two pieces of clothes : a loosely-draped knee-length hijab and a long skirt that covers both feet .
Due to their practicality , Muslim women can wear telekungs over their daily clothing and perform prayers at ease .
However , not all telekungs will guarantee wearers a good praying experience . Telekungs made from questionable fabrics may provide very little coverage to the wearers ’ aurah . Some telekungs can get loose very quickly ,
especially around the face and waist area , or they may also have skirts that are not long enough to cover the wearers ’ feet .
Such conditions will disturb the wearers while praying as they may be busy adjusting the telekungs . Worse , they may make too many unnecessary movements while adjusting the garments and eventually invalidate their prayers . In Indonesia , these prayer garments for women are called mukena .
Since telekung or mukena is something that Southeast Asian Muslim women wear daily for the five times prayer , more often than not , they have been using the same ones for years ( I ’ m guilty ). Over the years , the colours of these telekungs , usually white , may have turned dull , and the stretchable waistband of their skirts are now loose .
Therefore , since Ramadan is approaching , it is best to ensure that one has the best telekung to wear !
Welcoming Ramadan with a new telekung
Ramadan is known as the month of ibadah and purification . Ramadan is also the month where Muslims perform the Tarawih prayer every night . Since the duration of the prayer is longer compared to the daily ones with a minimum of eight rakat , having a clean , comfortable and well-fitting telekung will help Muslim women to have a better praying experience . After all , khusyu is something that everyone wants to obtain in their prayers .
Many local brands have created many types of telekung that come in various colours , fabrics and designs . These local brands have branched out from using the conventional white cotton materials usually associated with telekungs .
However , they still managed to maintain the minimalist appeals of the prayer garments . In addition , the advancement of technology has also inspired some brands to innovate their telekungs and enable the garments to be odourless and cooling .
Here are five Malaysian brands that may have what you ’ re looking for in a telekung .
1 . Siti Khadijah
The solid reputation of this brand when it comes to telekung is undisputable . While many other brands focus more on women ’ s daily wear , this brand makes it clear that telekung is their expertise . Telekungs at Siti Khadijah are high-quality , draped nicely and fit well at the most critical parts - face and waist . They are also divided into three labels : basic , premium and exclusive .
There are several styles for Siti Khadijah telekungs , namely signature , modish ,
