This is an attack on Garfield , who , along w / several other Republican and Democratic politicians of the 1870s , were implicated in the Credit Mobilier Scandal . Garfield allegedly received shares and was paid out $ 329 off of the scandal that rocked the Grant Administration . Others implicated included Schuyler Colfax , Henry Wilson , William B . Allison , to name a few . An investigation was launched , where it was found that over

The Democrats attempted to use Garfield ’ s association w / the scandal to paint him as a corrupt politician , however , these attacks proved unsuccessful , as he was elected president in 1880 .
