1802 . MUDDY WATERS , RAY CHARLES , RUTH BROWN CHATTANOOGA , TENNESSEE 1954 CONCERT POSTER . 22x28.25 ” on cardboard . Promoting a “ 5 Star Rhythm & Blues Revue ” concert at Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday Nov . 16 featuring Ruth Brown , Charles Brown , Ray Charles , Lowell Fulsom and Muddy Waters . Though Ray Charles gets the smallest strip naming his current top 10 R & B single “ Don ’ t You Know ”, only two days after this show he would record “ I ’ ve Got A Woman ” and by Jan . 1955 it was on top of the R & B charts securing his course to superstardom . Charles had been performing the song for the better part of a year and likely gave a rendition that Tuesday in Tennessee . Landing at the bottom of the bill is among the most important figures to rock ‘ n ’ roll music , the Chicago bluesman Muddy Waters , billed w / his most famous tune Hoochie Coochie Man ( creatively spelled “ Hootchy Kootchy Man ”). This poster originates from the estate of the promoter and all surviving examples had some degree of lower edge wear . This example has had expert fill by Chameleon Restoration fixing the lower right section affecting the “ Globe Poster - Baltimore ” credit , the “ nd ” in “ Band ”, Waters ’ image and margin . Restored to VF . The work is near seamless and displays beautifully . Muddy Waters posters from the 1950s are almost non-existent , there are three known designs that are each unique having a known population of a single example for each , all held tightly in collections not expected to reach the market anytime soon . Outside of that group there is only this multi-act design . ( K ) $ 500.00 1803 . THE CLOVERS , BO DIDDLEY & ETTA JAMES CHATTANOOGA , TENNESSEE 1955 CONCERT POSTER . 22x28-3 / 8 ” on cardboard . Promoting a “ Top 10 Rhythm & Blues Review ” concert on Sept . 27 at the Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga , TN featuring Faye Adams , The Clovers , Bo Diddley , Big Joe Turner , Bill Doggett , The Charms , Charlie and Ray , the Paul Williams Big Band , The Five Keys , Etta James and The Peaches , Al Jackson and Gene & Eunice . Suffice it to say an overloaded lineup of the era ’ s hitmakers . Fay Adams held the top spot on the R & B charts for almost four months w / the pair of songs listed on this poster , The Clovers were on a run w / 15 consecutive singles hitting the top 10 . Bo Diddley , an icon of early rock ‘ n ’ roll isn ’ t even given a picture despite his titular # 1 hit single being listed along w / its B-side , the still influential “ I ’ m A Man ”. It should be noted that this concert took place one year after Etta James started her long career . Margin toning , overall scattered faint age and light handling wear . VF . Superb graphics and striking color combined w / important figures make this an outstanding display piece . ( K ) $ 500.00 1804 . CHUCK BERRY TRIO “ ROCK & ROLL ” CHATTANOOGA , TENNESSEE 1955 CONCERT POSTER . 22x28.25 ” on cardboard . Promoting a “ Big Rock & Roll Show ” Fri . Oct . 14 at Memorial Auditorium featuring Buddy Johnson , Chuck Berry Trio , The Nutmegs , Arthur Prysock , 4 Fellows , Al Savage , The Spaniels , Ella Johnson and Queenie Owens . While several hitmakers adorn this poster it ’ s Chuck Berry , a founding father of rock that really sets this off . A terrifically early Berry artifact , this is the only poster we ’ re aware of utilizing the moniker “ Chuck Berry Trio ” which was quickly dropped in subsequent months . The song listed here “ Maybellene ” was Berry ’ s first single on Chess records and had been released in July but was already a major hit selling a million copies by the end of 1955 . Encouraged by Muddy Waters to meet w / Leonard Chess , Berry traveled to Chicago and Mr . Chess was smitten by Berry ’ s take on a Bob Willis hillbilly country number “ Ida Red ”. Berry explained that it was one of the most rousing numbers at integrated “ salt and pepper clubs ” and Chess agreed the idea of a rockabilly number sung by an African American had tantalizing potential . They changed the name to Maybellene and it became a crossover hit among the first to chart on the R & B , country western and pop charts , helping to usher in the phenomenon of rock ‘ n ’ roll . Small horizontal tear at upper margin , age at edges , corner and scattered ink marks that occurred in production . VF . While there are rarer Chuck Berry posters given the history and the eye-popping design this one gets our vote for most outstanding- if you had to have only one representative Berry poster this is it . ( K ) $ 500.00 1805 . BB KING AND RUTH BROWN 1957 CHATTANOOGA , TENNESSEE MULTI-ACT BOXING STYLE CONCERT POSTER . 22x28 ” cardboard poster by “ Globe Poster- Baltimore ” advertising a “ Concert & Dance / Monday Mar . 18 ” 1957 in Chattanooga , TN . Also pictured are Ruth Brown , Chuck Willis , Annie Laurie and Jimmy Reed . Minor handling and corner wear . VF . A super clean example featuring an outstanding lineup . ( L ) $ 1,000.00 1806 . Aug . 8 ” at “ Memorial Aud .” Headlined by Little Richard w / additional acts Bobby “ Blue ” Bland , Junior Parker , The 5 Royales , Wynonie Harris , Big Maybelle , Tab Smith , Jimmy Reed , Noble Watts and Tony Harris . Richard was in the midst of his artistic height having already charted three major hits in 1957 ; “ The Girl Can ’ t Help It ,” “ Lucille ” and “ Jenny , Jenny ”. Before the end of 1957 he ’ d add two more in “ Good Golly , Miss Molly ” and “ Keep A Knockin .” The architect of rock ‘ n ’ roll was in good company this night w / three more future Rock ‘ n ’ Roll Hall of Famers on the bill in Bobby “ Blue ” Bland , The 5 Royales and Jimmy Reed . Minor age and wear at edges most notably along top edge at left . Otherwise only trivial handling and minor corner bumps . VF . An alluring lineup of influential artists who helped pave the way for the future of rock ‘ n ’ roll . ( J ) $ 300.00 1807 .
