Lovely polychrome decorated transfer of the “ Death Of Wolfe ” after Benjamin West ’ s painting and William Woollett ’ s engraving published on January 1 , 1776 that was responsible for popularizing the image w / the masses . Other side depicts a two mast ship captioned “ The America ” including waving American flag . Below handle is a 15 star federal eagle and below spout are owner ’ s name “ John Hilton ” and the “ Hope ” emblem w / woman leaning on an anchor standing on rocky shores . Expert spout and handle restoration are near seamless . Minor wear to handle and overall light handling . VF . Transfers remain crisp and vivid color makes this a standout . While the three figures are likely generic Colonials they bear a striking resemblance to Washington , Jefferson and Hamilton . Scattered small chips and staining along top and bottom edges . Fine . A rare survivor w / no restoration . A stirring transfer providing a window into the roots of the fight for American independence . The lower quotation is reported to have been from a raucous dinner in New York given in honor of the Continental Congress , American Army and the late Gen . Richard Montgomery who had perished Dec . 1775 during the invasion of Quebec .
