592 . CIRCA 1927-28 BABE RUTH AND LOU GEHRIG ( HOF ) BUSTIN ’ BABES AND LARRUPIN ’ LOUS BARNSTORMING ORIGINAL PHOTO PSA / DNA TYPE I . Presented here is a unique and historical image depicting the two greatest players in New York Yankees history at the height of their supremacy . The 1927 New York Yankees , with their line-up forever remembered as “ Murderer ’ s Row ”, are widely regarded as the greatest team in MLB history . Leading the offensive onslaught that season was the greatest power hitter of the era , Babe Ruth , who swatted a then MLB record 60 home runs while teammate Lou Gehrig was right behind him , amassing a total of 47 long balls . Following their AL pennant and subsequent demolition of the NL ’ s Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1927 World Series , Ruth and Gehrig embarked on the most famous cross-country barnstorming tour in baseball history , known as the Bustin ’ Babes and Larrupin ’ Lous Tour . Spanning a period of nearly three weeks , the duo took on all comers across the entire United States from Providence , RI to Los Angeles , CA . These wildly popular exhibition games acted as fundraisers with all proceeds from the ticket sales going to benefit several notable charities . Photo is 4.75x6.75 ”. While a number of different images from this historic tour have sold at auction over the past decade , we have been unable to locate another example authenticated by PSA / DNA as a Type I image while picturing only the two Yankee icons , Ruth and Gehrig , sideby-side without any other individuals included in the photograph . A similar but not identical image of the barnstorming duo has come up for auction on a couple of different occasions and includes copies of their signatures within the image , thus making them Type 3 photographs by definition and excluding them from rivaling our offering here , which we believe to be the finest example extant . For those who collect original photos of Babe Ruth and / or Lou Gehrig , this is certainly one that is a must-have and surely a centerpiece of any pre-war baseball photography collection . Striking image of the Iron Horse taken during the peak of his New York Yankees career during the late 1920s . Lou Gehrig spent his entire playing career w / the Yankees from 1923-39 , protecting the Babe for most of those years , batting clean-up for the vaunted “ Murderer ’ s Row ” line-up . In addition to his then-record
592 total of 2,130 consecutive games played , Lou would finish his career with a batting average of . 340 along with 493 home runs , 1,995 RBI ’ s and 1,888 runs scored . Gehrig was a two-time AL MVP , Triple Crown winner , seven-time All-Star and seven-time World Series champion . Lou was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 . Photo is 8x10 ”. Type III designation , meaning that it was produced from a duplicate negative within an approximate two-year period from the time that the image was taken . The c . 1920s dating by PSA makes this one of Gehrig ’ s finest and earliest portraits and provides the collector w / the opportunity to acquire this example for less than the cost of an identical Type I , if one of those even exists . ( K ) $ 500.00 594 . 1888-89 N173 OLD JUDGE CABINETS EDWARD SEWARD ATHLETICS PSA 1.5 ( MK ) FAIR ( POP 1 OF 1 ). 4.25x6.5 ” w / photograph affixed to cardboard mount . These cabinet cards were issued by Goodwin & Co . during 1888-89 as a premium available by exchanging coupons found in Old Judge or Dogs Head brand cigarettes . Since the coupon owner could select any ballplayer from the checklist provided , the majority of surviving examples from this scarce series tend to be the biggest stars of the day . Thus , the more unheralded ballplayers have few , to only a single known surviving example , in many cases . Most but not all of the N173 cabinet card subjects were also included in the N172 Old Judge card series , the most widely collected and coveted baseball card issue of the 19th century . Seward pitched essentially four MLB seasons , from 1887-90 , all with the Philadelphia Athletics . During the three year span from 1887-89 , Seward won an astounding total of 81 ball games , leading the American Association in shutouts and strikeouts in 1888 . Has a bold image w / great clarity . PSA census indicates that this is the only example of this card ever graded by PSA . ( K ) $ 500.00 595 . 1908-09 PC760 ROSE COMPANY POSTCARD MATTY MCINTYRE PSA AUTHENTIC . 3.5x5.5 ”. Not only one of the scarcest but also one of the most coveted postcard series of the early 20th century . Postcards in this series have green background and bw player portrait photo inside a gold ring along w / surname and team in addition to crossed bats , baseball , diamond and fielder / batter . McIntyre spent the majority of his career playing for the Detroit Tigers and was a key player for their 1907-09 pennant winning ball clubs . Back has been used , w / postmark and stamp . Photo is sharp and bold . PSA census indicates that only two examples of this card have ever been graded by PSA . ( J ) $ 300.00
