The left most 1 / 5 of the button has vertical banding as made . Light grey spots blending evenly into the background and one light yellow spot in the white field above the “ I ” in “ Washington ”. Following the deaths of two African American sanitation workers due to the city ’ s neglect and unsafe working conditions , 1,300 African American sanitation workers went on strike in protest beginning in mid-February , 1968 . In April , Martin Luther King came to Memphis to speak out in support of the strike , stating : “ We ’ ve got to give ourselves to this struggle until the end . Nothing would be more tragic than to stop at this point in Memphis . We ’ ve got to see it through .” King was assassinated the night after this speech .
