Accused of both theft against the organization and improprieties by a female choir singer , Eason was actually impeached by the 1922 convention . When Garvey was brought up on mail fraud charges through his Black Star Line shipping company , Eason was set to be the primary prosecution witness . On January 2nd , 1923 James Eason was shot twice in a New Orleans alley . Though widely believed to be an assassination ordered by Garvey , he was never charged . Garvey button is Exc .
