Coolidge and Davis were the Republican and Democratic nominees , respectively , while LaFollette ran on an independent Progressive ticket . McAdoo was a Democratic hopeful in 1920 and 1924 . He was the son-in-law of Woodrow Wilson and was the leading contender for the nomination in 1924 . However , a contentious Democratic Convention against rival Al Smith led to both McAdoo and Smith withdrawing from the nominating process , leading to Davis ’ s nomination .
