Edwin Booth was a renowned actor during the mid-to-late 19th century , most well known for his roles in Shakespeare plays , including Hamlet , among others . Unfortunately his success as one of the most talented actors of his generation were overshadowed by his younger brother , John Wilkes Booth , and his assassination of President Abraham Lincoln . Following the his brother ’ s death , he disavowed him and refused to let his name be spoken in his presence . Edwin went on to continue a successful career as an actor until a stroke in 1891 led to his retirement . In a miraculous coincidence , just months prior to the assassination , Edwin saved Robert Todd Lincoln ’ s life on a train platform in New Jersey .
