centered philosophy. The color scheme, artwork, acoustics, layout, state-of-theart technology and increased patient capacity all are designed to support the delivery of personalized care, John says.
Opened in December 2012— just in time to accommodate a drastic increase in flu patients needing hospital care— the new addition features 171 spacious, private rooms, each featuring a personal bathroom, a flat screen TV, a comfortable guest area, personal temperature control, Wi-Fi internet access; and a computerized nursing nook that affords a level of quiet privacy and personal patient care that is unheard of in a traditional semi-private room setting. Comfortable open-air waiting areas on each floor are equipped with TVs, original glass sculptures by Chambersburg artist Michael Fisher; nature photographs by Dr. T. Toe Thane, radiologist with Chambersburg Imaging Associates; and artwork specifically selected for the
facility by Maryann Fisher, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, Chambersburg.
The King Street addition also allowed the hospital to increase the number of its cardiac catheterization labs from two to three— with a corresponding increase of space from 3,100 square feet to 20,000 square feet— and all of the specialized cardiac equipment represents the latest technology.“ We have equipment here that you will probably not see at too many other facilities,” says Dr. Alylmer Tang, interventional cardiologist.“ There are only 10 other similar labs in the United States. GE brings physicians and healthcare specialists who are considering upgrading their facilities to tour our labs. We have been a beta-testing site for GE for some time to test new software.”
Dr. Sanjay Dhar, chair of Summit Health’ s clinical decision team of hospitalists, said the facility enhances the integration of service delivery by enhancing the continuity of care. For cardiac
catheterization procedures, patients typically had to go to several different places to be treated. Now, from check in to discharge, patients are cared for in one place, explains interventional cardiologist Dr. Arshad Safi.“ They meet one doctor who is responsible for them for the day; and one set of cardiac nurses who care for them, meet the family, and at the end of the day, they say goodbye.”
It’ s all part and parcel of the hosptial’ s goal to provide comprehensive, personalized care. Even in evaluating whether to renovate the hospital’ s existing space versus building new, John says the Chambersburg Hospital team recognized that renovation would have interrupted patient care and disrupted the routine of patients and staff. The King Street facility buttresses the benefits derived from a focused, organized, planned and supervised system of care that follows the patient from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave the facility. §
