The soft, rhythmic whisper of rubber on asphalt— whr, whr, whr— sounds a steady, soothing accompaniment as I ride along on the Western Maryland Rail Trail( WMRT) just west of Hancock. This morning, birds call out their spring songs, and a doe with tiny twin spotted fawns looks up as we pass, seemingly not terribly concerned about our presence. Fellow cyclists pass with a cheery“ hello,” and the occasional train rumbles by from the West Virginia side of the Potomac, the sound carrying across the river in the still morning.
