[ the design ] was done purposely to make them more open, with larger bathrooms, and having washers and driers in the unit.” Just like moving into a brand new house, residents could pick flooring, tile, paint color and other upgrades, including one custom wheelchair-accessible shower.
The fact that the Woodlands connects directly to the community center is an additional attraction.“ Residents can stay totally inside and make it to the dining room, the community store, the pool, chapel, everything,” Rich says.“ We did have five or six residents that relocated to the Woodlands from elsewhere on the campus to be closer to the community center and in a larger space than they had.” Having amenities like a game room, dining, hair salon, lounge, fitness center, bank, mail delivery and more all accessible under one roof was a big plus for many of the Woodlands’ new residents.“ When you get to be in your late 80s, it’ s nice to have everything at your finger tips and not have to go far,” says Muriel Sullivan, who moved to the Woodlands from Charlottesville, Va., to be closer to family in Charles Town, W. Va. She also appreciated the new construction and the building’ s design, citing her apartment’ s bump-out alcove that affords plentiful natural light.
Paul Usary and George Darrow— who were neighbors in the Greenwich Park community before moving to apartments on the second and third floors of the Woodlands in late 2012— agree that having indoor access to everything was a big plus.“ We appreciate it. It’ s nice for sure,” George says, adding,“ these apartments are just beautiful.” His twobedroom, two-bath apartment on the third floor offers views of the mountains. Paul had looked at other apartments previously, and invited George along for his Homewood visit. Paul was initially impressed by Homewood’ s people and the continuity of care, and was further impressed with the apartments.“ They’ re very well built— they have large windows in the front and marble window sills, which are broad,” he says.“ The apartment’ s very comfortable, and the people here are really nice … I think I made a good move. I like it a lot.” §
