FROM THE PUBLISHER
Dear Reader,
Spring has officially sprung, and I’ m happy to see that once again, events are popping up all over Washington County! Our May / June Calendar of Events( starting on page 20) is so huge, we just couldn’ t fit it all in the magazine. So be sure to visit our website at www. hagerstownmagazine. com and click on Community Calendar to view dozens more cultural and community events. Did you know HM has the largest and most comprehensive events calendar in the area? New events are added daily, so check back often or“ like” us on Facebook at facebook. com / HagerstownMagazine for announcements, behind-the-scenes-action and weekly giveaways.
I always enjoy this issue, because it highlights creators of art— painters, illustrators, sculptors, novelists, poets, musicians and performers— along with all of the great opportunities we have to participate in or experience them. And, you’ ll notice all kinds of spectacular services in the“ Celebrating Downtowns” section featuring the town of Funkstown and three pages of advertising highlighting 28 businesses in Hagerstown’ s City Center.
Our advertisers have been cooking up a LOT of exciting opportunities, so there’ s no excuse not to get out and enjoy our beautiful community. Here are a few to check out:
• Washington County Garden Tour, sponsored by the Rural Heritage Museum on June 8
• Hagerstown Suns season is in full swing, with events like the Nora Roberts Reading Challenge, May 11 – 12 & 25 – 26, and the Mystery Bobblehead Giveaway, sponsored by the Hagerstown-Washington County CVB on June 29
• The Frederick Speaker Series brings thought leaders Gen. Colin Powell on May 9 and NPR’ s Terry Gross on June 13 to the Weinberg Center
• Mason Dixon BBQ’ s Memorial Day Pignic, May 25 – 26, benefits the Make A Wish foundation
• Throughout June and July, Leitersburg Cinemas features $ 1 Summer Kids’ Movies
• Western Maryland Blues Fest rolls into town May 30 – June 2( for the full schedule, see page 59)
• Activities and seminars for Seniors abound( see our senior living calendar page 98)
• Seafood Festival at Nick’ s Airport Inn, June 3 – 15
• Weekly entertainment and karaoke at Maloo’ s Pub & Grill, and so much more! I’ m looking forward to seeing you out and about!
Best wishes, Kate Rader, Publisher
About the Cover
As the Topcoat department manager, Funkstown native and musician Rich Hannon( left) plays a key role in ensuring each instrument made by renowned guitar maker Paul Reed Smith( right) is as beautiful as it is playable. On page 38 HM takes a look behind the scenes of the Stevensville, Md., factory, photographed by Turner Photography Studio, and discovers a like-minded love of music, craft and giving back that Rich and his mentor share. Special thanks to PRS Guitars for their hospitality and assistance. photo: Chris Jackson
