CAMPUS EXPANSION BOOSTS EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The University System of Maryland at Hagerstown( USMH) opened in 2005 with a mission to provide higher education opportunities to residents of Hagerstown and the surrounding areas. At USMH, students can complete the last two years of a bachelor’ s degree or earn a master’ s degree. Enrollment has climbed steadily since the center’ s inception, with approximately 500 students currently taking classes.

To accommodate this growth, USMH is leasing space from the City of Hagerstown in the former CVS building, located west of USMH with University Plaza separating the facilities. The City renovated 2,700 square feet in the back third of the building to meet the specific requirements of USMH. With input from USMH officials, the space was configured into three faculty offices and three classrooms.
The offices are occupied by Frostburg State University( FSU) education faculty, and many of the education classes are taught in the new classrooms. The FSU education programs offered at USMH have grown during the past two years, with one program, the bachelor’ s in early childhood / elementary education, nearly doubling in enrollment.
According to Dr. John Stoothoff, coordinator of Frostburg educational programs at Hagerstown,“ Education students will benefit
from the exciting technology facilities the new space affords.” Dr. Jamey Tobery-Nystrom, coordinator of the Master of Arts in Teaching( MAT) program, explained,“ Technology like the Promethean Boards [ interactive whiteboards ], which are housed in each classroom, and iPads will be used to simulate how teachers use technology in the classroom.”
Additionally, the space boasts a classroom that is larger than any of the existing USMH classrooms, allowing for more teaching options.“ We have programs, such as the MAT-elementary and early childhood education that might benefit from whole-group instruction,” says Dr. Stoothoff.“[ The large classroom ] provides opportunities for onsite professional development for staff and community partners,” adds Dr. Nystrom.
“ The increased space enables us to expand our class offerings and accommodate larger enrollments,” says Mark Halsey, USMH executive director.“ I believe that two buildings with grass in between constitutes a campus, and as we establish this campus, we improve our ability to provide accessible and affordable higher education opportunities to area residents.” l
