The Newcomer House, one of only two historic homes on Antietam National Battlefield that are open to the public, was recognized with the Maryland Office of Tourism Development’ s Cultural Heritage Tourism Award.
HERITAGE SITE HONORED
The Newcomer House in Sharpsburg was recognized with a Cultural Heritage Tourism Award at the 32 nd annual Maryland Tourism and Travel Summit. The awards recognize excellence and major contributions in economic impact, green / sustainable tourism, cultural heritage tourism and elevating Maryland ' s image as a tourism destination. The Newcomer House— a joint project of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau( CVB), the National Park Service and the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area— is one of only two historic homes on Antietam National Battlefield that are open to the public and is an excellent example of adaptive reuse of a historic structure.“ Being able to utilize this historic home, for exhibits and information, helps tell the story of the entire heritage area, along with the historic sites and various attractions throughout Washington County,” says CVB President Tom Riford.

A DISTINGUISHED VOLUNTEER
Joyce Stevenson, president of the Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village Auxiliary was honored as a distinguished volunteer during the National Philanthropy Day luncheon in November. Joyce, a Waynesboro, Pa., resident, is a nurse by background and has served as president of the auxiliary for five years. She was nominated as someone“ passionate, enthusiastic and always affable” in her work to assist Fahrney-Keedy, overseeing all the auxiliary’ s fundraisers.“ As the auxiliary president, Joyce oversees all auxiliary related fund-raisers. These activities direct a substantial amount of support for Fahrney-Keedy’ s retirement living programs and services,” says President and CEO Keith Bryan.“ Joyce gets along with everyone, making her the ideal leader of the Fahrney-Keedy Auxiliary.” Visit www. fkhv. org.
FUTURE EDUCATORS HELP SAN MAR
The Future Educators Association( FEA) at Hagerstown Community College recently held a raffle that raised more than $ 900 to benefit San Mar Children’ s Home in Boonsboro. The funds will be used to purchase technology needed for educational activities. According to HCC professor and club co-advisor Mary Beth Chaney, HCC students will be returning to San Mar Children’ s Home in the spring to volunteer as tutors and peer mentors and to assist with a variety of social events for the children.
