In addition, there are other less tangible benefits of senior pet ownership. Pets offer wonderful companionship and can provide a support system for seniors who don’ t have family members or friends close by. Pets provide a social outlet including the opportunity to interact, which is especially important for those who don’ t get out often. Pets can help their owners overcome depression, one of the most common medical problems facing seniors today. According to Dr. Diane Pomerance, president of Polaire Publishing and author of many books on animals and their companions, seniors who have pets experience less depression, loneliness and anxiety than those without them. There are many reasons why pets help their owners achieve these positive health benefits. First, pets require time and attention, giving physical contact and unconditional love. Pets need to be fed, walked, groomed and played with— all activities requiring action and providing exercise for pet owners.
