Macbeth takes his 1st step towards corruption when he kills Duncan to
become King. Although first reluctant,
his wife's insistence and his ambition win
over his morals and he goes through with his wife's plan to kill the king and once done says, "I have done the deed" (55)The next morning he kills the chamberlains in a supposed "fit of rage" when really he is just covering his tracks and letting his emotions out after killing Duncan. Going from killing only on a battlefield to killing 3 innocent people in a day, is the start of a downward slope for Macbeth. His ambition is starting to take over and poison his morals.

t the beginning of the play, Macbeth
is a relatively happy , loyal captain
serving under King Duncan of Scot-
land. Although Macbeth is agressive
on the battlefield, he seems to have
a pretty strong sense of morals and what's right and wrong. Once the witches reveal the propehcy of Macbeth becoming King and Thane of Cawdor, and actually becomes Thane of Cawdor proving the propechy true, Macbeth begins a downwards spiral. At first he only thinks about killing Duncan saying," I am thane of Cawdor: If good, why do I yield to that suggestion, whose horrid image doth unfix my hair, and make my seated heart knock at my ribs, against the use of nature? Present fears, are less than horrible imaginings: my thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical" (23)The struggle for the Scottish throne takes over Macbeth's priorities which causes him to neglect his responsibility to rule Scotland wisely.
