At this point the person opposite me made
a comment about the delay. That was
when I realised who it was. Brian Labone.
Here was my opportunity to talk all things
Everton with a legend in the club, but no.
I made some lame comment about the
delay and what I’d been doing in London.
When I got home, and often when I think
about that encounter, I wonder how the
conversation would have gone, if only I’d
been brave enough to say “I know you,
you’re Brian Labone and I’m an Everton
season ticket holder…”
Just outside Runcorn the train came to a
halt. After 15 minutes the guard advised
passengers that the delay was due to a
trackside fire and we could not move until
the fire was out and power restored.

I was travelling back to Liverpool from
London by train, probably in the early
1990’s. Opposite me in the carriage was
someone I recognised but no matter how
hard I tried, I couldn’t put a name to the
face.
