60". Sadly, it was not yet grouper season and we had to release the fish. Capt. William said that it was the biggest gag any client had ever put in the boat in 25 yrs of guiding. I had caught the fish of a lifetime! I looked it up later and found out that the world record was 80 lbs 6oz. It could have been a world record. I caught a fish of a lifetime back in June while vacationing at Dauphin Island and wanted to share the story with you and your readers of the potential world record gag grouper I caught and had to release due to season restrictions. I was fishing with Capt. William Pugh (Rocked Up Charters - Destin, FL) approximately 25 miles off of Dauphin Island, AL. I was jigging a Rockford Rattler off the bottom in about 200 ft of water when this giant hit. It felt like I was going to get jerked over the edge of the boat a few times during the near 1/2 hr fight! When the fish finally surfaced, Capt. William said, “Oh my God, you’ve caught a monster gag!” Although we had no scales that would go up that high on the boat and didn’t take any official measurements - we both agreed that this fish was easily 70 lbs plus and was all of This, thirty inch plus redfish was landed by Blaise Keller of Kingsville, Texas while fishing on Baffin Bay in July.
