60". Sadly, it was not yet grouper season
and we had to release the fish. Capt.
William said that it was the biggest gag
any client had ever put in the boat in 25
yrs of guiding. I had caught the fish of a
lifetime!
I looked it up later and found out that
the world record was 80 lbs 6oz. It could
have been a world record. I’ll never know
but I will never forget how blessed I felt
that day on the Gulf - this IS why we fish!.
Thanks for your time.

Hello, I am a reader and avid
fisherman. I caught a fish of a lifetime
back in June while vacationing at
Dauphin Island and wanted to share the
story with you and your readers of the
potential world record gag grouper I
caught and had to release due to season
restrictions.
I was fishing with Capt. William
Pugh (Rocked Up Charters - Destin, FL)
approximately 25 miles off of Dauphin
Island, AL. I was jigging a Rockford
Rattler off the bottom in about 200 ft of
water when this giant hit. It felt like I was
going to get jerked over the edge of the
boat a few times during the near 1/2 hr
fight!
When the fish finally surfaced, Capt.
William said, “Oh my God, you’ve
caught a monster gag!” Although we had
no scales that would go up that high on
the boat and didn’t take any official
measurements - we both agreed that this
fish was easily 70 lbs plus and was all of
This, thirty inch plus redfish was
landed by Blaise Keller of Kingsville,
Texas while fishing on Baffin Bay in July.
