Editor’s Notes
Spring is big trout season and this issue features at least
two elements necessary to catch big fish; an area that harbors
big trout and the artificials being used up and down the coast
with great success on the big mamas. For the location, an area
easily accessible to North Gulf anglers is Lake Pontchartrain
that in recent years has offered up some the largest trout being
caught on the Gulf Coast.
The other key element is artificial baits – “old” and “new”
style. These baits are meant to imitate the action of a mullet;
always tempting to big fish. Many modifications have been
made to these baits over the years, including construction
materials and the ability to sink very slowly. The pause that
often brings that little “thump” we all love to feel.
Spring is also a great time to hit the Gulf surf. From Texas
to Florida, surf fishing is the next closest thing to offshore
fishing. Many of the fish commonly caught at rigs and wrecks
in the Gulf, often venture near the shoreline and can be caught
by land bound anglers as well. This issue’s “Best Bets for Gulf
Beaches” author, David Brown, is an expert on fishing the surf
and is just out with a new book on surf fishing titled,
“Sportsman’s Best: Surf Fishing.” Although “Best Bets” covers
the Gulf Coast, the book takes in the eastern seaboard, as well
as the Gulf. Quite a large undertaking. Not only will a reader
learn about new places, technique and gear, the book is
beautifully illustrated with around 250 photos taken by some of
the best fishermen/photographers in the business today.
