Over the years I have asked many guitarists
for the story of how they got started. None
can top the legend of a kid in elementary
school who went to see Stevie Ray Vaughan,
and wound up with an on-stage seat - on
the guitarists’ own amplifier. Kenny Wayne
Shepherd takes the prize stating, “I walked
away from that show saying, ‘I’ve got to get
a guitar.’ I think that is really what sparked
my interest in guitar. Besides the fact, that
as far as I can remember, I always wanted to
play, even when I was 3, 4, 5 years old.”
And like so many others, he soaked up the
greats from their recordings. These days
he has been busy with The Rides (Stephen
Stills, Barry Goldberg) and a new solo album,
Lay It On Down. But not so busy he couldn’t
share some essential albums with our
readers. “There’s a lot,” he exclaimed. ■
