DUANE ALLMAN SESSIONS 7 Herbie Mann “Spirit in the Dark” (1971) 8 Derek & the Dominos “Mean Old World” (1970) This mashup of funk, blues, and jazz is dominated by Herbie’s flute improv (spoofed so perfectly by Will Ferrell in the film Anchorman), yet also accompanied by Duane’s guitar work. Though not a jazzman, Allman easily navigated this two-chord vamp (C7 to F7), and delivered his stinging brand of blues in a long solo. Studio champ David Spinozza played rhythm guitar and added his own funky lead at the track’s finale (in the left channel). From Dominos session in Miami, Florida on October 2, 1970, this performance features both guitarists playing slide on metal resonator guitars, and Slowhand handling vocals. Duane’s guitar is on the right channel and he delivers a barn burning solo over the blues riff. You can hear some of Eric’s slide work later in the track on the left, but as you’d expect, Allman’s bottleneck steals the show. It’s a remarkable and intimate piece of music. Better still, “Mean Old World” features two of rock’s greatest guitar legends having the time of their lives. ■ 46 GUITAR TRICKS INSIDER DIGITAL EDITION NOVEMBER / DECEMBER
