The 12-bar blues in Fig. 5 sums up several
of the ideas presented previously while add-
ing a few new ones for your “listening and
dancing pleasure.” Measure 4 contains a first
inversion (3rd on the bottom) G which also
happens to move smoothly to the C7 in mea-
sure 5 and continuing the sequence to the
C#dim7 in measure 6 via the three chro-
matic bass notes. Measures 7-8 consist of a
dramatic descending chromatic sequence of
NOVEMBER / DECEMBER
dominant chords walking down from G7 (I) to
E7/B (VI). After the jazzy II-V move in mea-
sures 9 and 10, the turnaround in measures
11-12 “harmonizes” a walking bass line from
I-V while also sneaking in an Ab7 in measure
12 to lead the ear back to the I chord “step-
wise” in the next chorus of blues (not shown).
Performance Tip: Play the G7/B voicing in
measure 4 with the middle, index and ring
fingers. ■
