NUGGETS
8 COOL
CHORDAL
LICKS
By Dave Rubin
Many blues and rock solos carved in
granite feature licks created from
chord and scale tones such as “Johnny
B. Goode,” “Little Wing,” and “Sultans
of Swing.” The “secret” to their success
is essentially the melodies derived from
the major pentatonic scale, the Aeolian
mode, the Mixolydian mode, or the
composite blues scale. The “trick” is
the combination with related chord
notes in a manner that produced
a musical earwig.
Along with teaching private lessons
in NYC, Dave Rubin has written
over 100 blues, classic rock, jazz,
and country guitar books for the Hal
Leonard Corporation. His latest is
Inside Rock Guitar: Four Decades of
the Greatest Electric Rock Guitarists.
