Dire Straits was a breath of fresh air on Top 40 radio in the punk and disco era of 1979 with a lead singer who sang like Bob Dylan and played guitar like Clapton-meets-Chet Atkins . Fig . 7 is reminiscent of the way the potentate of swing , Mark Knopfler , memorably navigated the vi-V-IV changes of the chorus with harmonious dyads in 3rds . Observe the way the progression hangs on the V ( C ) chord for two measures , thereby producing palpable anticipation back to the vi ( Dm ). ■
Along with teaching private lessons in NYC , Dave Rubin has written over 100 blues , classic rock , jazz , and country guitar books for the Hal Leonard Corporation . His latest is Inside Rock Guitar : Four Decades of the
Greatest Electric Rock Guitarists .
