Nobel Prize recipient Bob Dylan created a template with biblical allusions for countless variations in 1967 on John Wesley Harding . In Fig . 3 the chords are voiced in the most common acoustic “ folk guitar ”
manner . However , using 6-string barre chords at frets 5 ( Am ), 3 ( G ) and 1 ( F ) is also a viable option for smooth transitions as Jimmy Page did for his solo chords in “ Stairway to Heaven .”

By far the most famous version of the Dylan classic was the guitar masterpiece recorded by Jimi Hendrix in 1967 on Electric Ladyland . Though justly lauded for his revolutionary and wildly innovative solos and tone manipulation , Hendrix was a master rhythm guitarist
virtually without peer in his era . Using chops gained during his years laboring as a sideman on the “ chitlin circuit ,” he fluidly mixed broken chords , arpeggios , triads , and slick sliding dyads in 4ths in one of his creative rhythm fills as featured in Fig . 4 .
