SOUND ADVICE
duties, travel, rehearsing – if it interferes with
anything it interferes with writing. As far as
playing I can sit around in a room. That’s kind
of what I do. I got something from Steve Morse
that really helped me. Steve sits with his guitar
and does scales all the time. I spent some time
at his house for a few days and every night he
would watch MASH (the TV show) and play the
most amazing scales. He’ll sit there and talk to
you. He is so amazing he can use different parts
of his brain for different things. I admire that so
much I started doing that. I will watch TV with
my guitar and do scales and it works. It frees
your mind from your hand and lets your hand
do a lot of working on its own. When you’re
on stage you have to do that anyway. You are
singing and playing and sometimes your mind
wanders, but you always want to be able to
play your part. It really helps to do that – not
to mention your agility. Thank Steve for that
one. He is a hard guy to admire because he is
far above the realm of most of us. I can’t even
begin. ■
