NUGGETS : NAME THAT TUNE
Flautist Ian Anderson & Co . created a unique hybrid style of rock in the ’ 60s combining blues with British folk music . With the critical contribution of the unsung rock guitar hero Martin Barre and his nasty blues scale riff in Fig . 2 , the band hit their early stride with a concept album about a “ poor old sod .”

Surf rock was a much beloved genre in the early ’ 60s when instrumental music could still crash pop charts . A pioneering Southern California group had a hit in 1963 with a tune named for a wave phenomenon . Their minor key rhythm riff in Fig . 3 is known as an Alberti bass in classical music . |
The arguably ultimate heavy blues-rock band helmed by guitarist extraordinaire Jimmy Page led the competition in 1969 with their debut album . Fig . 4 acknowledges an early Howlin ’ Wolf compositionwith a pounding E minor pentatonic riff that can be cycled hypnotically and almost infinitely .
