CLASSIC CORNER: BACKTRACK don’t you come over and sit in and play it?” He didn’t even ask me if it was cool. John came over and did this. After the fact I didn’t care. It was fine. I just wanted my song to be up there. I love John and I love the way he plays, so I wasn’t going to bother him. I have never been that egotistical about who is playing on what. I’m playing the single tonic note and the chords going up. John is playing most of the filigree stuff in-between and Lowell plays slide. When I joined Little Feat they emphasized this ensemble form of playing – this let’s-not-fillup-all-of-the-holes. The space between notes is just as important as the note itself. So there was this wonderful nip and tuck, give and take kind of thing going on. It really helped me form that whole rhythm style of playing. And there’s always been something very rhythmic in my soloing. I’m not the most fluid of soloists; but I tend to kind of go at is as kind of rhythmically syncopated. ■ “All That You Dream” by Little Feat 28 DIGITAL EDITION AUG/SEPT
