CLASSIC CORNER
The first song I ever learned to play on the
guitar was “For Your Love” by the Yardbirds.
That’s a very important song for me. I
learned it on a beautiful guitar with palm
trees painted on each side of the bridge. I
don’t know what happened to it. Somebody
showed me a few chords and I figured out
the song. It’s a basic chord progression.
The next song I tried to learn was Roy
Orbison’s “Pretty Woman.” When The
Yardbirds were happening I was just getting
off on music for the first time. I think “For
Your Love” is still a great song. There is
something fundamentally rock about it. It’s
got dramatic chords, classic song structure
especially if you compare it with modern
hard rock. You won’t see every much
difference in structure and that was a very
long time ago. They were doing it back then.
Why are we still doing it now? We should be
ashamed of ourselves in some ways. ■
