The late, barrel-chested, British soul singer had “a little help” from a fellow
Englishman and guitar virtuoso who had long ago avoided lucrative session work
to form one of the all-time legendary blues-rock bands. In Fig. 7 he utilized
descending unison bends in a technique popularized by Jimi Hendrix. Bend with
the pinky backed up by the ring and middle fingers.

The two vaunted original guitarists of the premier Southern rock band regularly
moved outside blues and minor pentatonic scales to mine the melodic major
pentatonic scale. In Fig. 8 the “second” guitarist played the solos on the version
of a “brother’s” song recorded in tribute to the fallen idol. Play the B note with the
index finger and the bend with the ring or pinky finger. Either way, always back up
all bends with the remaining fingers. ■
