“I think once hospitals and other healthcare systems learn
what the Joint Commission rules actually say, and look at our
consistency with the ILCOR consensus science for treatment
recommendations, they will be more than satisfied to say that
the American Red Cross is an acceptable standard within
their internal credentialing committees.”
American Red Cross offers flexibility in the way
providers across all institutions are educated. “Flexibility
is critical,” says Epstein. “Instead of a one-size-fits-all
program for every employee, the curriculum is built
around adaptive learning, with pre-assessments that
allow individualized learning plans. This approach to
learning is more personalized and focused. It can
reduce course times for those who demonstrate
sufficient competency. It also saves the organization
money and increases staff availability for delivering care.”
The move towards a more flexible approach through
adaptive learning is the American Red Cross’s direct
response to feedback from their partners. “At the
American Red Cross, we listen. We are true partners
with our authorized providers, licensed training
partners, and employee stations that we serve. We
take feedback, and we’re willing to make changes to
delivery models or create new delivery models and
information based on what we hear from the field,”
Epstein emphasizes.
The American Red Cross is Mission-Focused
In closing, Epstein directed his attention to the “why”
behind the American Red Cross. “I think people forget
that the American Red Cross is not funded by the
United States government. We are funded by
donations and by the revenue from our educational
offerings,” Epstein explains. “Every dollar of revenue we
generate from offering these programs goes directly to
support our organization mission and operations—to
respond to disasters and needs for the armed services,
for international disaster response, and for the 65,000
disasters that occur every year in the United States.
That is why we do this. That’s why we want to be
leaders in developing great programs, to do the best
thing for our patients. And that money goes back to
directly support our communities, to take care of
patients, to eliminate human suffering, and to build
resilience in our country.”
