Knowing When to
Replace Your Vehicle Tires
The Penny Test
Tire Bar Wear
For this process, you will have to insert a penny into the most
shallow tread groove of the tire. Make sure the penny is in a
downward facing position. If the top of the head is still visible,
then you need to replace the tires as soon as possible.
Take a closer look at your tire and you’ll see narrow bands.
These bands appear in the groove across the tread of a tire
otherwise known as wear indicators. If these indicators are
even with the tire’s tread, then it means you’ve gone past the
limits of the tire treads hence it’s time to get a new one.
Do I Need to Replace Worn Tire
Yes, it must be replaced. Many drivers have been penalized
severely for driving on worn out, used tires and you don’t want
to dance to the rhythms of the law. The legal minimum for tire
tread depth is 2/32 inch. As a matter of fact, driving on worn
tires endangers your life so why risk it. If you discover that your
tires are worn out, do well to replace them as fast as possible.
