Tire Maintenance Tips to Remember • Wheel balance • A wheel balance has small weights that are placed around the wheel for balancing the tire and wheel assembly. This helps in preventing uneven wear of tire and minimizes the wheel vibrations during driving especially at high speeds. This procedure is performed when you install new tires in your car and should also be performed as a maintenance activity after 6000 miles or as per your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. • Tire pressure • The PSI (Pressure per Square Inch) of your tires depends on the type of your tires and also the type of driving you do. The owner’s manual that you have should have a recommended PSI based on your car and if it is not there, you can check with the tire manufacture for the range. Generally, PSU should be between 30-35. • Tread depth • It is natural for the tread of the tires to wear down over time. Though proper inflation can help prevent the uneven wear on the tire tread, it is bound to happen after driving for years. If the treads wear out, you will need new tires. To check if the tire treads need replacement, you only need a penny. Literally. Our very own Lincoln sir can help with your car maintenance. That said, all you need to do is place the penny into the grove of your tread with the head down. If you see the full Lincoln head, you surely need to get the current tires replaced by new one. • Sidewalls • You need to check for any cracks in the rubber, specifically spots that look more worn out and bends in the wheel rim. Poor alignment, low tire pressure and reckless driving are some of the reasons for damage in the sidewalls. If there are any cracks or bends, immediately get them repaired or replaced.
