Although subservient to the Annual General Meeting and the Board of Trustees, Student Council

• Has the authority to represent the voice of the students.

• Can make, repeal and amend the Standing Orders

• Receives a quarterly report from the Trustees

• Receives reports from the Sabbatical Officers

• Ratifies the appointment of External and Alumni Trustees

• Appoints, from within its number, Student Councillors to sit on various Union committees

• Appoints honorary life/associate members

Student Council is made up of an elected Chair, a representative from each academic Faculty, the three sabbatical Officers and 16 elected Chairs of Standing Committees. The Standing Committees provide representation to a wide range of different groups across the University and EVERY student is represented by at least one of them.

What is Student Council?

Student Council is run by you, the students. It is the main policy making body of the Students’ Union and is responsible for discussing the various issues that affect students in order to set the Union’s overall political direction.
