The DGA sees downtown Garner as an active hub of sports and recreation, the center of arts and culture for the community and home to a growing number of creative and tech entrepreneurs. The DGA leads the implementation of the Historic Downtown Garner Plan, developed in partnership with the Town of Garner and approved by the Town Council in 2010. The plan is a market-based, community-led vision for the downtown area that includes a plan of action for implementation. The Town and DGA provide support and technical assistance to downtown businesses, conduct long-term planning for downtown redevelopment and organize and sponsor special events downtown. PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURAL RESOURCES The Town’ s nationally accredited Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources( PRCR) Department coordinates a wide variety of programs for all age groups. Cultural, artistic, social, recreational and athletic programs are offered throughout the year. The department also works closely with other not-for-profit groups to support recreational and cultural arts activities. Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources manages 12 parks totaling more than 475 acres. These parks feature open space, athletic courts and fields, picnic shelters, playgrounds, walking trails and more.
The department also operates indoor facilities where fun, affordable programming and events are held throughout the year. Several of our parks feature picnic shelters, athletic fields and / or indoor areas which may be reserved for a fee. The Town’ s passive parkland includes White Deer Park( 2400 Aversboro Road,( 919) 661- 6982), which features a LEED Gold-certified Nature Center, and Lake Benson Park( 921 Buffaloe Road,( 919) 661-6982), location of the Garner Veterans Memorial.
The Town has two dog parks— at Garner Recreational Park( 221 E. Garner Road) and at Lake Benson Park( 921 Buffaloe Road).
