The DGA sees downtown Garner as an active hub of sports and recreation , the center of arts and culture for the community and home to a growing number of creative and tech entrepreneurs . The DGA leads the implementation of the Historic Downtown Garner Plan , developed in partnership with the Town of Garner and approved by the Town Council in 2010 . The plan is a market-based , community-led vision for the downtown area that includes a plan of action for implementation . The Town and DGA provide support and technical assistance to downtown businesses , conduct long-term planning for downtown redevelopment and organize and sponsor special events downtown . PARKS , RECREATION AND CULTURAL RESOURCES The Town ’ s nationally accredited Parks , Recreation and Cultural Resources ( PRCR ) Department coordinates a wide variety of programs for all age groups . Cultural , artistic , social , recreational and athletic programs are offered throughout the year . Garner Parks , Recreation and Cultural Resources manages 12 parks totaling more than 475 acres . These parks feature open space , athletic courts and fields , picnic shelters , playgrounds , walking trails and more .
The department also operates indoor facilities where fun , affordable programming and events are held throughout the year . The Town ’ s passive parkland includes White Deer Park ( 2400 Aversboro Road , ( 919 ) 661- 6982 ), which features a LEED Gold-certified Nature Center , and Lake Benson Park ( 921 Buffaloe Road , ( 919 ) 661-6982 ), location of the Garner Veterans Memorial .
