Description

Japanese Knotweed is an upright herbaceous plant, usually found in dense clumps that are 4 feet or more in height. Stems are smooth, hollow, and have jointed sections with the appearance of bamboo. Leaves are about 6” long x 4” wide, triangular or heart-shaped, with a pointed tips growing on crooked branchlets. Upright, white flower sprays appear in late summer.

Habitat

Knotweed thrives in disturbed areas, and once established can spread rapidly through the root system, even in moderate shade. It is commonly found near culverts, streams and road side ditches where plant fragments were deposited from fill material or floods.
